What to do following an injury at work

If you are injured at work:

• Notify your employer immediately. There are certain requirements under Missouri and Illinois law that require you to notify your employer in a timely manner. You also need to speak with an attorney experienced in handling workers compensation cases, such as Managing Attorney Mark Dean, to ensure your claim (which is different from your reporting of the incident to your employer) is filed timely.
• Don’t talk to an insurance company (who will represent the employer) if you have not spoken with an experienced personal attorney first. The insurance company has a job to do ‒ represent the interests of the employer ‒ not help you. • Focus on your injuries and getting the medical care and attention that you and your family need. Now is not the time to be stoic or ignore any pain or injuries that you may be experiencing. Don’t be a "tough-guy" or "tough-gal" ‒ get help. You should ask, in writing if possible, your employer to provide you medical care immediately.
• Don’t seek independent medical care from your own health care provider until your attorney tells you otherwise. If you have been sent to a doctor by your employer, you should abide by that doctor's instructions until your attorney tells you otherwise.
